Looking Forward to 2013!

Wishing you and yours a
healthy and book-filled 2013!

On this first day of the new year, I am counting my literary blessings (because, as you all know, I cannot live without books...synonymous with oxygen):

Blessing #1
I have a great stack of books to read (The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling is next) and a public library that makes it all possible when funds run low.

Blessing #2
I am connected with an incredible variety of book people through Goodreads.com and various book blogs, who continue to broaden my literary horizons and friendships.

Blessing #3
All the enthusiastic and interesting followers of Candle Beam Book Blog.

Blessing #4
Reading a physical book is always my first choice, but thank the stars above for my Nook which enables me to read while exercising on the elliptical at the gym.  Nerdy, huh?  (Reading is the only thing that makes exercise tolerable).

Blessing #5
Amazing authors, past, present, and future, who provide me with soul food.

Blessing #6
My coworker, Jamie H., and I have started a monthly book group for faculty and staff at the school where we both teach.  The group is called The Escape Artists (no chick lit or education books) and meets for the first time in about a week.  Jamie chose Shogun by James Clavelle as our first book (yes, 804 pages of feudal Japan in the 1600's).  I have to admit...this was not a book I would have chosen on my own, but let's face it...should cull out the weaklings right away.   :-)

Blessing #7
Bookmarks magazine, Strand magazine, Book Pages, and other review sources.

It truly is a wonderful life ~
Time to get back to reading...whoop whoop!

  1. LOVE this post!! I agree whole-heartedly! And now you've inspired me to take my audiobooks with me to the gym (I hate going to the gym...but I've got a membership to a really great gym that I haven't used in the past 8 months)...maybe that's exactly what I need to make it more tolerable!

    1. Hi Bree,
You are too funny! We'll both be well-read and healthy. I love your idea of bringing an audio book...I will try that, too!

    1. Hi Ivana,
Happy New Year to you, too! Which titles are you most looking forward to reading in 2013? After I finish Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling, I want to read Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan.

    2. I'm going to finish Cloud Atlas first, and start Life of Pi. There are a few new YA releases in January that I'm waiting for (third book in the Across The Universe trilogy by Beth Revis).
I've wanted to read Shogun for a while now but I guess I was intimidated by the size. Good luck :)
